GT40P Header Installation | Installing GT40P Specific Ford Racing Shorty Headers...

We are installing the CORRECT headers for the GT40P heads. These headers are specifically designed to work with GT40P specific heads. There is no need to get special spark plug boots when installing these headers. Out of the box they come ready for paint. I decided to go with a flat black VHT paint (very high temperature). These headers are very high quality and come with all bolts and gaskets from Ford Racing. On the GT40P heads, the spark plug angles are different than GT40’s. This makes conventional headers very hard to use because of spark plug boot clearance. Save yourself the hastle and go with these GT40P specific headers from Ford Racing and save your spark plug boots from fire and burning. How To Install a Harmonic Damper (balancer) on a Small Block Ford 302...

An important step in your roller 302 budget build is the harmonic damper. Make sure if you are using a later model H.O. roller 302 you use a 50oz. imbalance harmonic damper. Grease the crankshaft prior to installation and make sure the balancer is installed completely onto the crankshaft.  You can verify this by installing the lower crank pulley and the water pump pulley, you should require a .950″ spacer to make the pulleys align properly. If they align without the pacer you’ve installed the damper incorrectly and the damper will need to be pressed on fully. The keyway on the crankshaft will line up with the notch on the balancer shaft. How To Install Roller Rockers and Pushrods on a Small Block Ford 302 | GT40P...

When installing the roller rockers and pushrods on the small block ford 302 you want to pay attention to a few important details. Always work in a clean workspace and stay organized. This is a process that is a bit time consuming so make sure you have an hour or so set aside to do the job the right way. Begin by checking pushrod length. Always make sure your roller rocker ball is perfectly centered on the valve tip. Once you have your desired pushrod length, order heat treated chromoly pushrods if you have an aftermarket camshaft and valve springs. Begin the installation by placing a ratchet and socket on the crank bolt. You will be turning over the engine several times by hand to complete this process. Organize your new rocker U-Channels, pushrods, and roller rockers on your workbench. BEFORE YOU BEGIN: When working with self-aligning pedistal mount roller rockers: Install a new rocker channel and one roller rocker onto the head. Place another rocker bolt into the boss on the head where you will be working. Tighten the rocker down to the head to establish a straight channel. Now you can begin installing the first roller rocker and pushrod. Get one roller rocker, pedestal, and bolt ready. Install a pushrod into the appropriate area. Make sure the lifter is on the base circle of the cam. You can determine base circle by rotating the engine until the lifter next to the one you are working on begins to rise. Now install the roller rocker onto the head and begin to hand-tighten the bolt. Tighten with one hand while twisting the pushrod with the other hand. Stop hand tightening at the point where you feel resistance on the pushrod. This is zero-lash. Now get your...

How To Install Roller Lifters on a Small Block Ford 302 5.0L Roller Engine...

This is how I install roller lifters on a small block ford 302 5.0L roller engine. I begin by using Ford Racing’s performance roller lifters. Once I take them out of the box, I give them an oil bath for about 1 full week. This allows the lifters to fill with oil and all the air to escape from them. Next, I start with a clean work space and begin dropping them in one by one. This is a little messy process but in the end, the results are great. I also clean the dog bones and spider with degreaser and re-oil prior to installation. Enjoy the photos below. Installing the Oil Filter Adapter on Small Block Ford 302...

This is a simple yet very important step in the process. You will need to pick up an oil filter adapter to mount the oil filter properly. This part is made by Allstar Performance Part Number: ALL92003. The existing adapter is removed by a hefty 32MM socket. Once removed, clean the area where the filter gasket will be installed on the block. Then thread the new oil filter adapter into the block and tighten with a HEX socket. Thread your oil filter onto the block and you’re done!                    ...

How To Install Cylinder Heads on Small Block Ford 302 5.0 | GT40P Heads...

This is one of the biggest steps in your 302 budget build. The cylinder head installation is a thorough process and there are steps you must take to ensure proper cylinder head alignment and torque specifications. Begin with a clean work space. Make sure all parts are clean and you remain organized. Make sure you have a good set of cylinder head alignment dowels prior to installation. Install all four dowels and be certain that they are straight and properly seated into the engine block. Get a good quality set of Felpro head gaskets and make sure they are free from defects and are straight. Lay the cylinder head gaskets onto the head dowels and apply a small amount of engine assembly lube to the dowels. Next, set the cylinder head carefully onto the dowels and provide even pressure on the heads to seat them onto the dowels. Get your new head bolts and install the washers on the bolts so that the chamfered side is facing the bolt head. Apply the torque sealer onto the threads and hand tighten them into the heads. Next, set your torque wrench to 70 ft. lbs. and follow my torque sequence specification below. Oil Pan Installation on Small Block Ford 302 Roller...

This is a fairly straight forward installation and only a few considerations need to be made. Purchase a quality aluminum oil pan that is front sump style to match your new oil pump & pickup screen. When considering an oil pan, make sure the mounting lip is thick and has a good amount of material. Use a 1 piece rubber oil pan gasket that has the steel within the gasket. When mounting the oil pan to the block, ensure that the mounting surface is clean and free of any contaminants. Use ONLY GRADE 8 mounting hardware and washers. Torque the bolts to 15 Ft. Lbs. and recheck once all bolts are installed. The bolts you will need are 1/4″ x 20 x 1″ and the end bolts are 5/16 x 20 x 1″ PART NUMBERS: OIL PAN GASKET (FORD RACING) 1 PIECE STYLE: M-6710-A50 ~ $19.97 SUMMIT RACING Purchase Here OIL PAN (KMK PERFORMANCE): ARC A8446 ~ $79.99 EBAY                            ...

Timing Cover & Water Pump Installation Stage 1 | Small Block Ford 302...

In these steps we will set the timing cover and water pump into place. Keep in mind that this is not a final installation because a lot of the bolts used in this process will be determined by the accessory bracketry used later on in the build. Primarily, you want to install these components to set the oil pan and gasket for final installation. For this build, I used a Dorman aluminum timing cover and Ford Racing water pump. I was a little disappointed to find that the water pump is made in china. I will trust that Ford Racing built a quality product. The timing cover comes with the gasket and the front seal (everything you need). The water pump also comes with the gasket. You will need a set of ARP bolts to complete this stage of the installation. Fuel Pump Eccentric Installation on 302 Small Block Ford | Mechanical Fuel Pump...

This is how the fuel pump eccentric looks on a small block ford. This is a common part that is often very overlooked when converting a new EFI 5.0L roller 302 engine to a mechanical carburetor engine. This eccentric looks like a small pulley that has offset mounting holes. One accommodates a 3/8″ mounting bolt that runs through the camshaft. Ford letter camshafts utilize a 3/8″ bolt. This is a 1 piece eccentric by Ford Racing and feels durable and high quality. You will need to use a longer camshaft dowel or alignment pin because it needs to penetrate the eccentric’s alignment locating hole. How to install a Double Roller Timing Chain Set & Gears on a Small Block Ford 302 5.0...

Today we will be installing one of the most critical components of any engine. The timing chain and gear set. This set happens to be a very high quality Made in U.S.A. Cloyes timing set. This set is double roller and ready to go. I like to write on the gears with a silver paint pen to date and brand the set. I also used my paint pen to make the timing dots or marks more visible. Make sure you take your time in this step and ensure that your cam is at TDC (top dead center) with the key-way pointing at the 12 o’clock position and the camshaft’s dowel key-way pointed in the 6 o’clock position. You cannot be a tooth off on this so get it right. Use assembly lube on the gears and chain. How to Install a Camshaft in a Small Block Ford 302 5.0 | E303...

In this post, I will explain how easy it is to install a camshaft in a small block ford 302 engine. For this build, I decided to go with one of Ford’s famous letter camshafts. This particular model is commonly referred to as an “E” cam or E303. This is a nice cam that will provide adequate horsepower and sound nice. It has a lift of .311 @ .498 with an advertised duration of 282 degrees. This process is quick and easy and does not require any special tools. You will need a good set of latex or nitrle gloves and some Permatex assembly lube. You will need a clean work space and some time. How to install the Oil Pump & Screen on a small block 302 V8...

We are beginning the installation of new parts on the budget build 302 engine. We begin with the new high volume Melling oil pump and Melling oil pump screen. These parts are made in the U.S.A. and are very high quality. The oil pimp comes with a new hardened drive rod and the pump screen comes with a new gasket. You will need to clean and reuse your old bolts for this install. I purchased my parts from a local performance parts store called Gearhead Performance. They are extremely knowledgeable and I like to support local businesses as much as possible. The prices and links below are for your reference only. Painting the small block ford red...

After deciding on a color theme for the newly cleaned small block, I decided to run with a fire engine red paint color. This was a fairly simple process. Just make sure you have all of the oil removed from the block and you use a good degreaser. Allow 48 hours for the paint to cure before working on anything else. The red paint came out nice on this little small block ford.                    ...

Engine Cleanup & Tear Down...

My engine build will be more of a classic setup. I am removing all of the fuel injection parts and everything down to the short-block. I did not photograph this process but I did document the cleanup process. When I started with this engine it was filthy, greasy, and smelly. The existing parts had to go. I will sell the cobra intake manifolds and throttle body on ebay and hope to make around $200 for the set. The engine’s GT40P heads were removed and set aside for the machine shop. I will mention the heads in a future post. Once I could see the pistons, I pulled the oil pan and got to work cleaning and scrubbing the engine. I used a blend of engine degreaser purchased from Home Depot and easy off oven cleaner. Don’t breathe any of the vapors in and don’t let the chemicals sit on the metal engine parts long enough to dry. Rinse & repeat until the engine is shiny and new. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose, paint, and oil thoroughly.                ...

The Donor Roller 302 Small Block Ford Engine...

This is where I will begin my journey to build a stout 302 small block Ford motor (engine) without breaking the bank but still using very high quality MADE IN USA parts. I am very strict when it comes to quality and function and like to only support U.S.A. manufacturers. This will be my most affordable engine build to date. I hope to show as much of the process as possible and include all part numbers and sources along with full price lists. Lets start with the donor block. My local junk yard (auto salvage yard) had a mid 90’s roller 302 that came out of a Ford Explorer. This is a newer engine that has the roller lifters & camshaft. This is a superior design compared to the old-school flat-tappet style motors. I will start with this engine. I paid $399.00 for it and they dropped it into the back of my pickup truck. This is where the journey begins. Below are some of the photos and video on taking her home.      ...
